Tonight, to prove I have been busy and not just blowing smoke out of my ass, I am sharing a section from the first chapter of my novel. It is important to know that in the parallel universe that this novel is set, there are 4 genders. The two we know, plus another two that evolved alongside our own. The two new genders are a common trope in fanfiction I've wanted to see in original fiction for quite some time.

What sets these genders apart from our own is physical. They are based on the male gender, but one has a knot on the base of their penis like members of the canine family. The other gender is male with a womb that can conceive like a woman. The anatomical ways this happens are explored in the story/are an essential part of the plot.

This is all explained further in the novel, but I wanted to lay down this bit of information to set the scene, as it were.

Without further adieu, one part of a larger project I've been working on the past month and a half:

With a roll of his eyes, Lucas turned back to his workbook. As his gaze slid across the rest of the class room, he happened to notice someone else doing the same. He froze for a moment when their eyes met.

It was Tadd. As in Tadd Kelyn, of the relationship Tadd Kelyn and Laural Gotch, ltd..

A dizzy sense of lightness came over him. Lucas tried not to shrink away at the nervous fluttering in his gut. It grew to the point he had to swallow to keep his stomach from climbing into his throat. Pulse sluggish, he took a quick breath and nodded once, barely perceptible.

Tiny smile quirking his lips, Tadd raised one eyebrow slightly. He was blissfully unaware of the danger he posed, either that or he didn't seem to care.

Either one was enough for Lucas. Trying to put on his most disarming smile, his insides clenched enough that mutated it into a grimace. There was no way Tadd had seen what he had been reading just a few minutes ago. He certainly hadn't the ability to read thoughts. Maybe the other boy was just being the jerk that he was. Alphas were known to be aggressive in asserting their dominance.

Well, what do you think? It's still pretty rough at this point as I am only now working on chapter 2. I still have a bit of reworking on the flow of this as the character is part Welsh/spent a great deal of time before the story there. That changes the 'voice' a bit. I've incorporated some, but it still needs a good brit-picking.

Tonight's fare is an excerpt from my first published novel. In the story, the main character, Simon, is an android that serves aboard an orbital station. There he encounters something that completely changes his view of the universe. To find out what that is, you'll have to purchase the ebook.

For now, an excerpt from "List All Functions":

It's been a week since my last posting with good reason. I've been a busy beaver. Hell, right now, I've got my story open and just finished checking my lulu.com account. They listed "List All Functions" on the Apple bookstore for me. I'm so excited. I'm going global!

Soon, I'll have a free book listed on Lulu.com. The current book, which is free, is writing itself. Hopefully, that will stay true.

Here's a sample:

Two-fifty, the amount left him almost breathless. With a shake of his head, he shuddered and let his hand drop. That wasn't even enough to cover Jerome and Sasha's friggen tequi-shots habit! His anger was quick; Charlie clenched his fist around the folded paper.

He had busted his ass at the stupid job! What the hell did they think by docking his pay? Then again, they probably didn't care about the fact that he had to survive on this 'pittance' as Sasha liked to put it. It wasn't like they had to work for a living. Apparently selling people worthless soaps made from rendered hog fat was a good racket.

This is by no-means final and might be deleted from the story all-together. Who knows in this business.

I offered, and you responded that you'd like to see a sample. It's not much, but it should give you an idea of my style and competency. I'd like to think I have a little of the latter, and a great deal of the former.

The novel is currently, and tentatively, titled "Realms: Hidden In Shadow". It's quite pretentious and I'm not certain I'll keep it. Quite frankly, this story was started more out of a parody of so many fantasy novels, but, I've grown quite fond of the idea and wish to try my hand at a legitimate piece. So, maybe I'll keep it as an ironic reminder.

Without further adieu, here's Johanny (you'll get the joke in a minute, just read it):Click me to get bigger. )

It's not copy-edited, all mistakes are quite unintentional. Be warned, I will be watching for trolls. If you dislike something, keep it civil. Besides, Trolls aren't planned until at least chapter 3. Wait until the book comes out, if you're a troll, you'll be in good company then.

EDIT: Upon reading the redundancies in my work, I find I do indeed have little competency. Some judicious editing will fix that in post-production, though.
